2nd Race Stand-Up Paddle Surfing in Kea (Tzia)

2nd Race Stand-Up Paddle Surfing in Kea (Tzia)

For the second consecutive year, the Stand-Up Paddle Surfing competition has made history!

After the success of last year’s first SUP in May, Vourkari port of Kea welcomed the super active crowd of SUP surfers for another session frenzied puddling, this year extended for whole two days!

The natural bay of Vourkari is one of the very few ideal spots in Greece for this specialised and increasingly popular water sport.

The first day of the event consisted of the Fun Race (aka “amateur match”) giving the chance to beginners to safely wave their paddles and get to grips with the technique. Boards were provided to anyone who couldn’t bring their own and more experienced SUPsters helped freshers get to grips with the popular sport.

At night, teams and contestants would naturally gather around the port’s famed fish tavernas for the customary ‘ouzomezedes‘ gastro-treats and nibbles, of course complemented by the finest Ouzo ‘on the rocks’ !

Sunday was when serious SUPing took place! Starting from 11am and following a group warm-up by professional fitness coaches, a succession of races took place with fervent, but noble, competition exercised by all participants!

As seen from the pictures, SUPing demands a good deal of balance, speed and strength.

The award ceremony took place later in the afternoon with many prices such as free hospitality, meals at restaurants as well as many more pleasant surprises were presented to the winners!

The event involved cross training programs for everyone involved and closed off with energising yoga sessions in order for physical stimulation to meet blissful mindfulness.

What more would you expect from a greek-inspired “healthy body in a healthy mind” summer event on the Greek island of Kea?
